I feel like the average proof for the best bourbons I've had is always in the 90-95 range (the Knob Creek Small Batch being the exception at 120) so that's a consideration. If you want an inexpensive, low-key entry level bourbon, Benchmark No. 8 used to be my go to...

...when I was unwilling to spend more. It's made by Buffalo Trace, and I've heard it has the same mash bill as their signature brand, but is aged less. It's one of the better bottom shelf pours I've had.

If you’re looking for sweet I recommend making yourself a Manhattan. 2 parts bourbon, 1 part sweet vermouth and a dash or 2 of angostura bitters. FWIW, I use Ezra Brooks bourbon. It’s relatively cheap and good to use for mixed drinks.

Old Fashioneds are pretty great, too. I don't do cocktails, but I like having one of these now and then.
