Probably single and childless. Or dead. Neither of which would be good. https://twitter.com/AJA_Cortes/status/1168536753675718657?s=20 …

There is a vast difference between embracing and succumbing. To walk the path of Christ is to embrace one’s own shadow, to fully accept oneself and recognize the unmet needs and misunderstandings which gave birth to the darkest sins. Without this, one is trapped in endless sin.

Christ commanded us to deny ourselves. We cannot do this unless we know what we are denying. And mindless self-rejection is not the calling, because that way leads to crumbling willpower and secret resentment. We must embrace, accept, understand, and nurture without succumbing.

We see this most powerfully in the testimony of the Saints. They fully understood themselves and denied themselves even as they discovered sanctified ways to fulfill those unmet needs they uncovered. Through this, their stories gain greater impact to inspire the struggling.

“Why did I do this?” is the first step to ending the cycle of sin.

“Because I am bad” is a half-truth, the same as a child would conclude. “Because I was lonely and my loneliness led me to starve, and my starvation clouded my mind against what I knew was right.” This answer provides a path to end the cycle and ensure it does not happen again.

“My shadow was lonely and that loneliness caused it to hunger in unholy ways.” Therefore, “I must find holy ways to sate my need and prevent loneliness, because I know now what my shadow will do when it’s lonely.”

In this way, embracing one’s shadow, the part of oneself containing all rejected needs and desires, is the true path to Christ for one who wants to understand the deepest levels of dependence upon the Lord. Each question only points back to that pure relationship as the solution.

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Do you love someone if you hate parts of them and reject their needs, order them on a death march of starvation? You don’t love them any more than if you fed them opium with your own hands to keep them happy. Neither is love.

Embrace. Understand. Meet the deeper needs in holy ways so the sin has no room to manifest. This is the path.

I thought AJAC meant “shadow” like “id” or “dark side” or whatever. I confess I suppose I don’t know what he meant.
