Cradle Catholic or new convert like me, it’s comforting that we all stumble together when a newly ordained priest switches up the proceedings every single week to eagerly test every possible combination.

Most of them do try to do their best. Many get almost zero mentoring once they’re put in a parish (it varies widely from diocese to diocese.). Please do give them the benefit of the doubt....and pray constantly for them! Sounds like you’re keeping a good attitude about it.

I’m just happy to have any new priests at all. They could have us doing aerobics during the homily and we’d still be pleased to see them.

Our current associate priest was so nervous for the first six months his voice SHOOK every time he spoke a homily. He grasped the Host like a dying man clutching a life preserver so he wouldn’t drop it when he lifted it up, but the sheer reverence in him was astounding to see.

I actually really appreciated how terrified he was because his heart was so totally fixated on his work. There was zero casualness in him whatsoever, we all could see he really knew he was in the living presence of God and was doing it for Him.

I’ve seen older retired priests in their seventies hoist the Host with one hand and then toss it into the bowl with a slight spin like a frisbee. But he held his breath as he lowered it into the bowl and gasped with relief every time he made it.

I felt a little bad during one of his breathless presentations when my son screeched, “HE’S GOT A TORTILLA!” Father’s eyes didn’t even flicker from the Host. Gotta respect that.
