Sometimes I read @NickColeBooks’ book descriptions just to learn how to do mine better. He’s a master at the cinematic elevator pitch. This is the pitch for his free book, The Red King. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019S9WEHA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8K6zDbBJ0NP0F …pic.twitter.com/wHJhWCQRvC

Here’s his pitch for The Old Man and the Wasteland. One lesson I take is that pitch sentences should begin with characters taking an action. Not long-winded dumps of scene setting and waxing philosophical. https://www.amazon.com/Old-Man-Wasteland-American/dp/1949731073 …pic.twitter.com/xV8HuLlgqy

Here’s his classic, and my favorite of his books, Soda Pop Soldier. Probably the longest of his elevator pitches. But still, you don’t get tired while reading it. @NickColeBooks uses pulpy wording to grip you in. https://www.amazon.com/Soda-Pop-Soldier-Nick-Cole-ebook/dp/B07MTM2CSG …pic.twitter.com/hN7TAlVNgM

My new series is dropping soon so I asked @NickColeBooks for help with my blurb. I’ll post mine first, then his changes, so folks can see the difference. Here’s mine.pic.twitter.com/tFBMXC0Ago

And here’s @NickColeBooks’ edit. Me: “Here’s some setting. Here’s more setting. Here’s a passive voice description of action. Please clap.” Nick: [chainsaw noises]pic.twitter.com/mdkY9wlTzp

I post this because as authors our greatest point of direct contact with potential readers is our elevator pitch. Mine has been weak for a long time, but by studying the work of a master like @NickColeBooks I’ve learned to write more compelling pitches. You can learn this, too.

Thanks for this thread! This has been very helpful. Book blurbs/pitches are some of the hardest things for me to write. Very helpful examples!
