Grew up Central Valley myself. In the space of twenty years it went from peaceful farmland to blood on the sidewalks and an epidemic of homeless folks overdosing outside the library. You try to leave and people get angry because they’re so miserable staying there by themselves.

The sheer hopelessness. No jobs to be found except entry level service. Only perceived way out is to take on mountains of debt, and still find no jobs. Start a business and they tax it into bankruptcy. Meanwhile your kids get molested or jumped at school.

I remember calling 911 and getting a busy signal. Tried to call in a dude for openly selling drugs to little children from his home address, cops declined to take the report.
