This problem is absolutely real. Grow up poor and you get programmed to spend what you have before it disappears.https://twitter.com/EdLatimore/status/1158079649554919425 …

One reason it's difficult to get out of poverty: The urge to buy something just because you have a little extra money. It's driven by weak ego and lack of time horizon. Even now, all these years removed from the hood, I still have to fight the urge to spend out of insecurity.

I have heard that SO many times, and can attest it is absolutely true.

Dunno if it'll help anyone else, but I started carrying a couple hundred in my wallet once we could afford not to park that in the bank and it's done a damn good job of curbing those impulse spends.

Huh. I have the opposite problem. I fanatically WON'T spend money, at all, even a little bit, even when I should. The thought of not having more money in my bank account, just in case, is kinda nerve wracking.

Yeah, the Crowbar problem, I need a crowbar to pry open my wallet, but I'm too cheap to spring for the crowbar.

I recognised this in myself twenty odd years ago, and asked my wife to step in and handle our finances. We work together with our money, and we have a lot more of it.
