If you only read masterpieces, you’ll believe you’re the worst author in the world. Take some time to see what the worst, mediocre, and average members of your field are doing. At the very least you’ll learn a host of behaviors to avoid, and that’s honestly just as important.

I can't understand why you'd want to see how the worst and mediocre of your field are doing, just to avoid mistakes, which you could learn from by actually making them Comparison with those worse than you can only lead to a subconscious complacency. Ego will feel wrongly content

“by actually making them” is exactly the part to avoid. Publishing books is quite costly and one bad entry in a series can taint the relationship with readers and shut down sales. Better to learn from people who’ve already failed and spare yourself thousands of dollars.
