“Why hasn’t there been another Great American Novel?” Because novel writing was dragged into universities and artsy circles where it’s become an expression of feelings instead of a personal craft. Schools stifle creativity to churn out literary snobs who produce formulaic dreck.

London is good, so is Steinbeck. It’s just the criterion of what could be considered great is rather wide.

There we’ll disagree, as I did enjoy it, though I personally don’t consider it a great novel by any means.

Perhaps it was just the way the teachers foisted it on us. I think it’s the same reason why I’ll always have a disgusted reaction to both the Grease book and movies.
