Depression is a sucking swamp, robbing you of joy even when you try to engage in activities you used to love. But the vast majority of the time, depression follows intense anxiety and learned helplessness. The trick is to weaken depression long enough to deal with the anxiety.

Depression can become so powerful it overwhelms the anxiety and all that’s left is black despair. There are pathways out, but they take some work with energy you won’t have at the start. Just begin small: Reach out for help. Just take that first step. Reach out and ask.

That because for men the cause of depression is usually a feeling of helplessness, powerlessness, and an inability to stop their pain or affect their world. You need even one scrap of hope to make that effort to reach out.
