It's native to your state. Mine too, but only certain counties; can't survive in our native forest. They have to be dead-ripe to eat them, or likely bitter (& slightly toxic). Wait until they fall off the plant. The fruit comes in curious little papery husks.

Here's the tasty one, but you can't grow it! Needs about 10 months or so frost-free. From tropical Andes at only moderate elevations. That's why I'm trying to cross them to get something tastier but still hardy.pic.twitter.com/MEDa4FeAqi
