Meh. I’ll make my arty farty what I want over the correct consumable piece every time. I know the option is out there to do the business-first model in writing but I find “I’m a space marine, and a damn good one too” to be just as boring as “strong female lead slay!!!”https://twitter.com/TheBrometheus/status/1153298389049544704 …

There is a rising wave when these bubbles get going that you can watch as a consumer - right now its SPEESH MAHRINES!!!!! all of the scifi section which is a snooze. Horror goes through these phases repeatedly as well.

When you talk about doing established genres and twisting them into adjacent unpopular ones in need of a refresh, you cut to the heart of the business case, I think. Why do series sell better? Why are popular media franchises kept alive as zombies for decades?

The most expensive and unpleasant thing a reader can do is go hunting for new books and stories. Having to sort through offerings, the pain of misses, the time spent /not reading/. It is terrible. With a series or a serial hero or a known franchise you just pick up the next one.

(Oof, I'm not good with Twitter threading, gents...) Genres work the same. Reader X knows they like Genre Y. They are gonna pick those blood soaked zombie harem litRPG books until they make themselves sick.

This is also the value of the fiction magazine - the magazine itself is a "known quantity" to the reader, even as the contents change. The reader doesn't have to do deal with decision making but still gets new and surprising material put in front of them.

I think it is good business. It is slightly staying ahead of said curve but being on the curve is where the dollars are. Making my steampunk books is not on that curve for example, nor is my arty sword & sorcery concept.
