I use my iPhone for so much business every day, but I’ve put 2 new batteries in it, apps have ceased to function with basic features, and it regularly halts for 10 seconds during writing text as it struggles to process. I’ve milked 4.5 years out of this iPhone 6. What next?

Assuming you want to stay in the iOS ecosystem or open to branching to Android? (Said without judgement - the job that buys me reams of paper and typewriter ribbons is mobile device tech support, so I've seen a lot.) :)

Yeah, I’ve put a lot of money into iTunes and iPhone apps.

Value for dollar - Get a refurb iphone 8. The hardware is not significantly off from the XR/XS and its recent enough to be supported by Apple for another 4.5 year lifespan. Barring that, an iPhone XR is a better choice the XS - almost identical specs, much better battery.

If I went all the way up to X series I’d aim for XR as the cheapest, just not sure I want to go that high and drop so much cash.

Yeah, if you aren't someone whose self-identity is bound up to your phone, the 8 is /plenty/ of device. What Apple wants for the X series is way too much for what you are getting. If the camera is important the 8 Plus (specifically) has a Camera that is almost as good as the X's.

Camera doesn’t interest me at all. Battery life and how long it will be supported are my two main concerns. Looking to get value, not bells and whistles.

Then 100% recommend iPhone 8, regular size. Looks like you can get one in the $300-400 refurbished and if you are careful enough to keep a 6 alive for 4.5 years you'll be gold. Budget a hundred dollars for a battery replacement in a year.

I’ll bear this in mind. Thank you!
