The cause is the industrial revolution followed by the grey depression, dust bowl, and two world wars causing parents to sell the family farm and move to urban centers where they worked 18 hour jobs and shut down emotionally but the kids didn’t understand this was done from love.

That broke the pattern of modeling affection and spending time together in large family units to make up for individual deficiencies. Also isolated each person away from the network and forced families to rely on companies for food and shelter instead of each other.

Then as I said, carry that down the generations and watch the lack of loving behaviors grow and manifest new problems.
