Something interesting I noticed as the Office of Readings has been going through the books of Samuel.

When David is fleeing from Saul and needs provisions, he visits Ahimelech, the priest of Nob, and ask him for bread. But there is no regular bread available.

Ahimelech offers David the showbread that had been placed before the Lord, but only if he and his men have abstained from relations with women, just as the priests of the old covenant were commanded to do during their service before the Lord.

David responds that he and all his men have so abstained because he always has his men abstain from relations with women before starting on a journey, whether the purpose of the journey is sacred or secular.

This is interesting because after David commits adultery with Bathsheba and finds out that she is pregnant, he calls Uriah back from the field so that he can get him to go home and sleep with his wife, hiding the origin of the pregnancy.

However Uriah refuses to go home. He instead sleeps at the palace gate. When David asks him why he does this, he responds that the Ark is lodged in a tent and his commander Joab is encamped in an open field. Therefore it would be wrong for him to go home and sleep with his wife.

David this has Uriah killed for keeping the same discipline that David, when he was out waging war rather than resting in his palace while his soldiers and commanders fought in his stead, made his men keep when they were on a journey or out on campaign.

This adds an extra layer of irony to the fact that Uriah the Hittite, the resident alien, is more faithful to the discipline and covenant of the God of Israel than David is now that he has the throne and feels secure.
