"A girl in the Pacific Island wearing hardly any clothes and a Victorian lady completely covered in clothes might both be equally proper or decent according to the standard their society, and both can be equally chaste, or completely unchaste."

"People who break a rule of propriety in their own time and place in order to excite lust in themselves or others, then they are offending against chastity. But if they break it from ignorance or carelessness, they are guilty only of bad manners." - CS Lewis

It depends if one believes one is going to Mass merely to have an individual experience and thus has the right to experience the divine however one pleases. Since this is not the Catholic view of Mass, it may be beneficial to review the purpose of Mass.

To me something like that would be a thing I would discuss with someone on the side rather than shunning or stopping a sermon to address it. I grew up Protestant so this is all foreign to me.

Right. We don’t have sermons. We do have short 5 minute homilies but the majority of Mass is open worship of God. So quietly asking her to cover during worship makes sense since it involves the altar and prayer. If they were just teaching that would be different context.

Mass is much closer to praying at a temple. We even have an altar. And many of the men struggle with sexual sin but are there to worship God and draw strength against temptation. Dressing immodestly at Mass in that context may harm their ability combat the temptation later.

Perhaps and it is just for a woman to be aware of how others will perceive them. But the other day another person was in a discussion group with men who blamed women for many nasty things. There's a line between holding responsible and blaming for weakness.

If the men leap over pews & sexually assault someone during Mass because she wore a low top, then sure. Wearing revealing clothing to a place where men will grapple with sexual sin and need to focus on the Lord for strength is not caring for your fellow Christian.

I suppose we just disagree about severity of the source. Even if we agree in general for both. I think we can both agree that the woman has a responsibility to be aware of her fellow Christians and a man has the responsibility to train his eyes away from that.

Perhaps. I also wonder how the different focus between our church services colors the difference of perspectives. :) Protestants tend to use the time to teach and share fellowship. Catholics use the time almost exclusively as temple worship. That’s a huge context shift.

I suppose you seem to put a huge emphasis on creating the environment for Mass. The importance of Mass is lost on me as I am not and have never been a Catholic. So I gravitate my focus to the persons.

Having grown up Protestant in a tiny church which ballooned into a multimillion dollar megachurch and then converting to Catholicism 8 months ago, I understand what you mean. :)
