It is the responsibility of men to be vigilant in a world against them. Forcing other women to cover themselves "for the sake of men" is only addressing half the issue. If a man is so vulnerable that he cannot stand shoulders without temptations there are greater issues.https://twitter.com/IntroiboAdAltar/status/1135593970627747840 …

No doubt it is charitable and just for a woman to dress appropriately but modesty and chastity is not the same. Modesty is cultural. Chastity is moral. One woman could be immodest in one culture or modest in another. CS Lewis pointed this out.

"A girl in the Pacific Island wearing hardly any clothes and a Victorian lady completely covered in clothes might both be equally proper or decent according to the standard their society, and both can be equally chaste, or completely unchaste."

"People who break a rule of propriety in their own time and place in order to excite lust in themselves or others, then they are offending against chastity. But if they break it from ignorance or carelessness, they are guilty only of bad manners." - CS Lewis

It depends if one believes one is going to Mass merely to have an individual experience and thus has the right to experience the divine however one pleases. Since this is not the Catholic view of Mass, it may be beneficial to review the purpose of Mass.

To me something like that would be a thing I would discuss with someone on the side rather than shunning or stopping a sermon to address it. I grew up Protestant so this is all foreign to me.

Right. We don’t have sermons. We do have short 5 minute homilies but the majority of Mass is open worship of God. So quietly asking her to cover during worship makes sense since it involves the altar and prayer. If they were just teaching that would be different context.

Mass is much closer to praying at a temple. We even have an altar. And many of the men struggle with sexual sin but are there to worship God and draw strength against temptation. Dressing immodestly at Mass in that context may harm their ability combat the temptation later.

The original case was badly stated. This isn’t an issue of men leaping overpews to assault someone. Rather, Mass is the one place they should not face sexual temptation. Covering up is a consideration to men who may struggle with sexual sin and could lose focus during worship.

I suppose I just grew up different. Protestant is very individualized in terms of outfits. We dress well and fairly modestly. I've never heard of shoulders being an issue before.

I’m curious what you think of 1 Corinthians 11. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+11&version=NIV …
