I have never been assigned to a parish with a confessional that has a face-to-face option. I have no idea who enters my booth on the other side of the dividing wall and confesses to me unless they tell me who they are.

Face-to-face feels like the priest is gonna slap his hands together and say casually “Right then let’s cleanse some sins and go get a bite to eat.”

I prefer face-to-face: It’s more difficult. It allows me to acknowledge the shame of my sin in incredibly real terms which in turn helps me to avoid the sin in future. But I don’t mind either way. The sacramental grace is the same in both cases.

I just gave my first confession two weeks ago and was surprised that face to face was even a thing. I feel like Daredevil lied to me.
