Man, I wish I’d had an uncle or grandfather take an interest in me. Even a single older man guiding me would have made such a huge difference. Men out here crying about not having a way to make a difference. Reach out to a kid in your family and give guidance. Change a life.

"Reach out to a kid in your family and give guidance. Change a life." Yeah, good suggestion. For me, the tricky part is how to start. What do I say to a teenage boy to get him to open up to an older family member who doesn't know him very well - and who lives far away. Hmm.

“We don’t know each other very well and maybe you don’t know what non-invasive guidance would look like. But I sure wish I’d had some. Let me tell you what I can offer and let’s get a relationship going.”

Sounds good to me. Don’t come off as an authority figure or charity, build a relationship between two men and tell him why it’s important.

Thanks buddy. I am going to try this at the next family reunion in a few weeks.

Also find out what his interests are. Maybe you can build a relationship by playing online HALO. Maybe he loves milSF and has no one to talk to about it. Maybe he’d like to hunt but has no one to take him. Planning a trip once a year - just the planning - could spark closeness.
