I feel very lucky to have had my uncle act as a father figure to me after my parents divorced. He's an absolute hero, broke his back when he was 14 and instead of letting that dictate his life, he started his own company and kept himself self-reliant.

"Reach out to a kid in your family and give guidance. Change a life." Yeah, good suggestion. For me, the tricky part is how to start. What do I say to a teenage boy to get him to open up to an older family member who doesn't know him very well - and who lives far away. Hmm.

“We don’t know each other very well and maybe you don’t know what non-invasive guidance would look like. But I sure wish I’d had some. Let me tell you what I can offer and let’s get a relationship going.”

In this regard, as in much if my life, I am quite lucky, perhaps, even, privileged. Male mentorship is definitely important for children.
