We have so much instant gratification but such little appreciation. We used to have to haul water from a river or pump and heat it for a bath. Now in many places it’s instantly available. Such immense wealth of pleasure. Do we appreciate our hot baths more, or less?

Imagine hauling water in several buckets and then heating it and pouring them into your bath. In a way you are actually crafting your own bath through labor. How good would that feel to finally sink in and luxuriate in the bath you created? Instant gratification is shallow.

This is not a call to do away with the dreaded convenience of modern invention. But it is good to remember old ways and experience them from time to time in order to luxuriate in real satisfaction at an experience created rather than provided. And to enjoy the ease we have now.
