Instead of giving something up. Why not strive to be a better person for lent? That part I never understood. Hey I'm going to NOT do something for 40 days... and then resume it!
Lent is a period of continuous reflection on repentance leading to the death of Jesus for our sins and His resurrection. Giving up an enjoyed activity puts the penitent in a mindset of sacrifice for the Lord and gratitude to have that thing in the first place.
I know that part. But the part that IRKS me is people saying: I'll give up Alcohol for Lent! And after lent they continue drinking... If you're giving up something for Lent you keep with it after Lent. At least that's how I was thought.
That’s good old fashioned hypocrisy. But the hope is that good habits formed during Lent will lead the penitent to break free from those grasping sins and turn more deeply into the Lord. :)
It is exactly the time to break those habits, if the penitent is willing to see them as threats to their soul.
So in the end, I suspect we both are lamenting that many of the faithful fail to see their venial sins as threats to their immortal soul.
