To start with, the link above is to the national website most US therapists use to advertise. It sorts by zip code so you can find local professionals. The next bit is about licenses. There are many but 3 primaries stand out: LMFT, LPCC, and LCSW. Generalizations follow:

LMFT is systemic and focuses on problems as they originate from family systems. Change the system, fix the problem. LPCC focuses on individual work. Change the behavior inside the person and they’ll change their life accordingly. LCSW focuses on resolving issues through support

These are gross simplifications but give a general idea about the key differences to each approach. All can be useful depending on the individual and the problem. Next is how to identify a therapist who matches your specific needs. Some people want religion, sex, etc to match.

Email them and ask questions. Treat the therapist like a business consultant you’re hiring to tune up your personal business. Would you hire someone without knowing their views and credentials? The approach they use? Be assertive with the questions.

Tell them you want a liberal, or a conservative. Tell them gender training is important. Tell them you want a Catholic. Tell them you don’t want feminist gender roles involved because your marriage is very traditional. Tell them you want your same race or ethnicity. Anything.

Also ask them to provide a referral to someone who meets your requirements. If they can’t, they’re required to provide a reference as bet they can, and therapists all keep contact info for colleagues who serve specific populations. They may not have your specific need, but maybe.

Therapists expect questions like these and don’t take them personally. They prefer upfront expectations so they can match you up right and not waste anyone’s time. Therapists understand the need for personal connection in treatment. This is not rude and is actually appreciated.

Use the above information to find a therapist who meets your specific needs. Meet with them and give it a shot. If it doesn’t feel right after a couple of sessions, say so. Therapists don’t take this personally. Ask for a referral to someone more like what you need.
