Also ask them to provide a referral to someone who meets your requirements. If they can’t, they’re required to provide a reference as bet they can, and therapists all keep contact info for colleagues who serve specific populations. They may not have your specific need, but maybe.

Therapists expect questions like these and don’t take them personally. They prefer upfront expectations so they can match you up right and not waste anyone’s time. Therapists understand the need for personal connection in treatment. This is not rude and is actually appreciated.

Use the above information to find a therapist who meets your specific needs. Meet with them and give it a shot. If it doesn’t feel right after a couple of sessions, say so. Therapists don’t take this personally. Ask for a referral to someone more like what you need.
