Men are taught to exert pressure in a handshake as a show of assertiveness and respect. That conflicts hard with the training not to hurt women. Thus, for many men, shaking hands with a woman is confusing because both sets of training fight against each other at the same moment.

The handshake becomes comfortable if the woman exerts strong pressure. But most women have no idea this conflict is taking place so they touch the hand delicately, which makes the conflict worse.

The best advice is for women to recognize this conflict and grip pretty tight. It’s a life hack that earns you instant respect from most men.

I give a firm handshake and adjust pressure as needed depending on response. What I cannot stand are the men who have to physically crush your hand. When I can see the forearm flexing and them straining to grip hard, it's a tell they have no idea what they're doing.
