I’ve noticed a recurring theme in female-focused novels: The women talk to themselves internally, even answering themselves. It’s not uncommon to see a stream of internal dialogue arguing back and forth. So, anonymous poll time: Women, do you experience this in real life?

It’s not prevalent in male-centric fiction. Perhaps an aside when the character notices something or is thinking through a puzzle, but generally not an internal argument. That seems in my experience to be specific to female-centric fiction and especially female authors.

Romance. Too many writers do this as filler when in fact the central storyline could be resolved in about a minute.

The closest male fiction gets to this is like the conversation John McClain had with himself in Die Hard for two lines after Takagi is murdered. "Why didn't you stop them, John?" "Because you'd be dead too, a- hole"
