Have to have some recoup time in between catastrophes. My book is a break neck pace of horrible stuff but like you said, I actually have a scene about shaving lol. Good points here.

I made that mistake once with a book, no rests. Even I got exhausted while editing it. Adding a couple rest scenes (which still contributed to story tension) definitely turned it into a better story.

Very few characters in fiction ever have to use the restroom during tense scenes except for spies. In science fiction there are no laundries but there are showers.

That’s what I’m talking about! Missed opportunities. I don’t want to read twenty pages about a guy struggling on the toilet after eating spicy tacos, but these small facets of ordinary life can be used sparingly to highlight deeper characterization.
