I've heard this happens in public schools. Part of that wonderful social conditioning the kids get. They call it "socialization."

One of my darling nieces, at 6 yrs old, had become the most tense child I'd ever met, full of artificial mannerisms and "sassy" phrases. She wasn't playing around. She was dead serious & committed to the act. She was worried about her image with the other 6 year olds at school.

That wasn't the only thing in her life for her to be tense about, but having to quit being a kid to pretend to be a short 13 year old at school or risk ostracism was not helpful.
