More likely that second part. Women can definitely teach each other. But as a matter of everyday behavior, men are more likely to begin at the very bottom and explain basics. Women generally assume the other person has a working knowledge or asks where to start.

Part of that is male communication. Men will stop the other guy with a comment about knowing up to a certain level. Women generally are polite about it and will tolerate the overexplanation. That can lead to feelings of being condescended to. Miscommunication.

Man: “I respect you so I’m going to explain this and share knowledge from the ground up, stop me when we get to your level so we can share and learn.” Offended woman: “Wow this guy is a jerk, he’s acting like I’m a total idiot. I can’t wait to blog this.”
