What I think you intend to say here is if a person spends years engaged in a craft or art but has nothing whatsoever to show for it, no collection of works or sales numbers or awards or anything at all, they likely have a fundamental lack in engaging with that craft / art. Right?

The same could be applied to bodybuilding, running etc if their efforts have borne no fruits and their body is still unhealthy.

Weight training is a good example of what he's talking about. As long as you have some kind of progression and consistency you'll get results, eventually. It might take you 10 years to get where you could have gotten in 5. So the fact that someone got results doesn't mean much.
