I re-read Darksaber recently, and if it weren't for the bad Luke/Callista romance (that wasn't his fault) and a certain death, that book's a blast. For the various flaws in the Jedi Academy Trilogy, KJA was the guy who really started welding the EU books together into a whole.
The Hutts build a budget Death Star that goes hilariously wrong while Luke goes back to Hoth and has a final showdown with the wampa whose arm he took, while Daala & Pellaeon plant the seeds of the superior Imperial Remnant and Luke's students have to defend Yavin without him.
