One night I was about 12 years old I asked my dad who is a pastor, daddy. Is it ok to be rich because the Bible says it’s easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven. Not knowing that my dad was fairly wealthy at the time....

He answered. Son it’s perfectly ok to be rich, it’s the love of riches that makes it hard for a rich man to get into heaven. That answer stuck with me because I always wanted wealth and nice things. But I also valued my spirituality. And I still do.

As I think about what he said today I understand that means I need to be the same person on the inside with money, and without money. Wealth or lack thereof is not our only defining quality. As much as we work on income we must also work on our inner man.

Bro, this strikes hard at something I’ve been pondering. I want to work hard and raise my family out of generational poverty, but I don’t want to damn their souls in the process. I’ve been worried about making too much and ruining my descendants. I see rich heirs and cringe.

What does scripture say. A righteous man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children. It’s good for us to work and provide for our family but we can’t make money our idol.

I think it’s a lack of perspective. I can’t even imagine having that level of wealth.

Read Proverbs. It’ll help with that perspective.

Thanks bro. I’ll take a look. Been grappling with this lately as I make very slightly more cash over the poverty line... so definitely not a pressing issue. Ha
