Mecha fans spend a lot of time running away from the perceptions of the genre (real and imagined), and desparately digging for series that they can pitch as “Okay it’s mecha BUT-“

And here I think is where GaoGaiGar is special. There is no “okay but” There is no “it’s actually about” There is no “it’s more than that” GaoGaiGar is a MECHA show. Unabashedly. Enthusastically. Unstoppably. Stereotypically. GaoGaiGar is mecha in crystallized form.

There’s not all that much original about it. It is chock full of welll-known tropes, mustache-twirling villainy, and simple themes. Everything about it can be found elsewhere - but that’s it’s strength. GaoGaiGar is the inheritor of a grand tradition, the true heir of a dynasty.

There’s no snark here, no leaning away from “kid’s stuff”. GaoGaiGar leans in, pushes to the hilt. It’s bold and bombastic and everything you’ve seen before and nothing like you’ve ever seen all at once.

“Unskippable.” In a word, that’s this series.

Whether it’s the ageless bop of the OP or the eye-watering beauty of the gattai sequence, the laughably ridiculously tool sub-theme or the way your heart races when a robot microphone rocks hard enough to fight God... GaoGaiGar cannot be skipped.

GaoGaiGar is the sword in the stone. It is a testament to craftsmanship from an era long past, and though left in the elements for many long years its edge has not dulled with age. There’s a glow about this series, the way it catches the light and dazzles as if freshly forged.

If your heart has ever felt a burning passion for justice If you would lift the tools of humankind to protect your loved ones in the defiance of the gods If you were ever an orphan child delivered to lonely lovers in a snow drift by an alien robot lion GaoGaiGar is for you.

Aaaaaand there’s the kicker. Sadly, it was streaming but the company went belly up. Praying it gets relicensed at some point.

"Hey kid" *Holds open trench coat* "You looking for some GaoGaiGar?" "Yeah...?" *closes trench coat* "Me too." *sobs uncontrollably*
