It's all about balance. Coming to terms with things you can't change doesn't require using them as an excuse to avoid taking responsibility. Unfortunately, blaming one's shortcomings entirely on immutable external/internal factors is easy.

Ime, therapists do not frame it that way. Mine have always emphasized what I should do to minimize depression via personal habit-building. But, even truly virtuous people also struggle with lifelong depression. Explaining that will probably be largely biological/sociological.

Well it’s both chemical and psychological it should be treated with both when necessary. Blaming resiliency or lack thereoff is something you should be careful with. Speaking as a person who lives with someone who is suffering from depression and has his own issues.
