As someone who’s been confirmed for 3 months now, let me take a stab at this... Coercing someone with excommunication would likely be an abuse of power, as obedience must be a choice. However, stating the consequences of the support of abortion in this case may be different.

Under coercion, a man may choose not to do bad but the choice is meaningless. Likewise, if he chooses to do good to avoid a punishment rather than out of obedience, the choice is meaningless. Coercion leads to lukewarm believers. That said, coercion to protect millions...

Now, all of us who call ourselves Catholics declared in our confirmation that we wanted to live as such, & this includes obedience to the Church in pertinent matters. So if She orders us to do something it is still meritorious even if we don't want it.

Please explain to me how this can be meritorious even if the person is compelled by fear rather than virtue? I’m genuinely curious, I want to learn your thinking.

1/2 Even if I behave well only for fear of Hell, still it counts. For the sacrament of confession to be valid, one does not need to have perfect contrition (repentance for pure love of God). Attrition (repentance for fear of one's damnation) suffices.
