Charity usually sounds like a person winning the lottery and using the money to rebuild homes or feed the poor in grand programs. Charity is also when you forgive a small debt, give away a beloved possession to make someone happy, or buy a warm meal for a homeless man.

Mercy is not just about forgiving the man who stole your car or shot your pa in a duel. Mercy can be holding back a harsh word in traffic, praying for the person who created more work for you, or explaining how to rebuild the relationship with someone who accidentally hurt you.

Every day, each person is given dozens of opportunities to explore virtue and choose to spread ripples of good throughout the world. The size and grandness of the act itself is not the point, and waiting for the perfect huge opportunity means missing millions of small chances.

Small acts become big acts when you take the time to invest yourself into something so seemingly trivial. That you took the time to care in so small a way displays the truth of virtue in your life. Anyone can love within grand moments, but a loving heart delights in small acts.
