Oh, you’ve “read the books” have you? Call me back when you read them every year. And when you’ve read the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth. And when you browse through the History of Middle-Earth for fun. https://twitter.com/boethiu5/status/1081030906222133248 …

Call me when you’ve read and re-read and re-re-read On Fairy-Stories. When you’ve read the minor works, like Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham. When you’ve read the editions of various stories and poems presented by Christopher Tolkien or Verlyn Flieger.

“I’m a diehard fan.” “I’ve read the books.” Please, son. You are like little baby. Immerse yourself in the Professor’s legendarium for a decade or so and then maybe, just maybe, you can come and share your opinion on Tom Bombadil with me.

Is now a bad time to confess that I stopped reading after Fellowship because I found the books too insufferably cheerful?

This is the best time to confess that you are a wrong person who I should block, actually

That was pretty much my wife’s reaction when I told her that as well. She breathes Tolkien.

I saw the movies first. Didn’t have anyone to introduce the books to me before adulthood (California school system). So I was expecting a dark gritty tone like the films.

Dragonlance was my first fantasy experience. When I saw the LotR films the first time I legitimately thought, “Oh, they’re taking the Elves and Dwarves from Dragonlance.”

I will fight you right now because I don’t want you to be right. I enjoyed the first three but felt it went off the rails too hard after those.
