It's true that kids have to read a lot of boring, pedantic crap in school. The piece of this that doesn't resonate with me is pushing off all the responsibility onto someone else.

I mean come on - we all had to read shitty books in school. Some of us tried reading other books outside of school...

Almost true. But very relatable. At least most books children are forced to read (here) are very much not for children at all. Like AT ALL. And they may be classics, but often they are boring as hell and have the relevance of a dry lemon peel. Except lemon peel smells nice.

It's something that I've been thinking about doing something about. More and more.

I wouldn’t say that was true for my high school program, there were several books that we were assigned that I genuinely loved and still do today. But my English teacher also allowed us some leeway in choosing books to do reports on independently

apart from that. So I got to read Brave New World, Watership Down, Count of Monte Cristo among others because I wanted to. I also thought it would be a good idea to read Hermen Hesse that year and BOY that was a mistake. I spent that whole report roasting the protagonist.
