Okay, that is a whole lot Biblical than I understood. I was baptized Catholic and had first communion, but as a kid I guess they never really explained these and later the practice was a bit confusing. Also I guess lot of responsibility on individual churches and priests.

Individual responsibility is on your parents to teach you these things, the Church isn’t for that. That’s why matrimony is considered a sacrament alongside priesthood, you’re tasked with raising and training a generation of believers. But many parents are unclear themselves.

The Church 100% embraces and teaches parents who ask. But parents need to proactively seek guidance. Mass isn’t about teaching like Protestant services generally are, but the same affliction happens in both: People show up and believe their presence in the pew makes them good.

I’ve known enough preachers’ daughters to know this ain’t just a Catholic problem.

I think we all agree there are problems in the organization too. But frankly, as neither of us are bishops here, not much we can do to address that. Unless Adam here becomes a bishop just out of spite... Okay that could happen.

As a married man I’ve already got a sacramental role in the Church, but the highest I could rise in the clergy would be the diaconate. Theoretically anyone could become Pope but they’re traditionally chosen from cardinals, and they’re almost always drawn from bishops nowadays.

So, barring some sort of divine intervention I doubt even my own rage and spite could drag me to the top seat to effect the necessary changes. One of my sons, however... Well, that’s a different conversation.

(the congregation in reformed churches traditionally has more say in things - for better or for worse)
