Seems to be confusion about Confession. Catholics do confess to God but there’s a helper there to talk us through not repeating the sin, plus the priest can reassure you that you ARE forgiven if there’s still doubt. God forgives, but the priest provides care during the process.

Okay, that is a whole lot Biblical than I understood. I was baptized Catholic and had first communion, but as a kid I guess they never really explained these and later the practice was a bit confusing. Also I guess lot of responsibility on individual churches and priests.
-
Individual responsibility is on your parents to teach you these things, the Church isn’t for that. That’s why matrimony is considered a sacrament alongside priesthood, you’re tasked with raising and training a generation of believers. But many parents are unclear themselves.

Well the priest stands in the person of Christ. So he is kind of.

Yeah I get that. Speaking to Protestants who’d recoil at that so being careful and clear. ;)

A sacrament— reconciliation—is a material sign instituted by Christ that points to a reality of grace. In the sacrament of confession your sins are actually and completely removed from you, by the priest who stands in the person of Christ.
-
We have them because a person is an embodied soul and you need the BODILY experience of forgiveness— hearing the priest, as Christ— say your sins are forgiven makes it real to you in areal felt way.

Reconciliation...sigh...so modern. This is why I hate the RCIA.
