The priest is not Christ. The priest has no power to forgive you in the place of God. The priest does not decide your fate. The priest’s job is to hear your confession so you can speak it aloud, keep it confidential so you don’t have to be afraid, and help you find ways to atone.

This is about pastoral care, guidance, and comfort. Reconciliation is the real name of the sacrament, Confession is the slang term. The goal is to help the person reconcile with God. The priest participates in that as a servant of Christ.

Glad you clarified, because that's not the common belief. As Baptist we sort of confess publically. We go to the alter to pray openly yet keep the sin between God and ourselves during prayer. So others see you but they don't know the details. Part of the openly confess thing

To deal with sin and seek counseling we visit with the pastor after service on on some other day of the week.

The scriptural justification for this is Matthew 16:19. Lutherans call this general concept the Office of the Keys. Pastors are called to condemn both corporate and individual sins and announce the forgiveness of Christ both corporately and individually.
