When I was very little, like 4 or something, this is my earliest real Christmas memory. My parents asked what I would want for Christmas. And I was a dumb kid and had no concept of what is possible and what isnt. And I think I just had a very fun dream the day before, so...

So I go on and explain that I want a toy mushroom, like the ones in the fairytales with the red cap and white spots and if you push a button, ants come out and march and ... I dunno, do stuff? I am a bit hazy on the rest. And I think they kept asking and I kept saying the same.

And by Christmas Eve I was really excited and genuinely believed I will get this gift which is totally something you can buy at a shop, right? Honestly, looking back, I dont know how my parents kept a straight face. This was so ridiculous a request. Anyway,

Obviously I didnt get the toy mushroom. But they got me a big, beautifully illustrated book of fairy tales. And I loved it so much for years. I asked them to read it to me, I would look at the pictures myself. And later when I learned to read I would read it for myself.

For me this story is lovely bc I asked my parents something outlandish and they somehow still got me the perfect gift. Maybe they realized my imagination was wild so stories looked like a good idea.
