Advent candle was lit for less than 1 minute before my son Rampage shoved his hand into the flame.

At my church, we have a family get up and read some Scripture before and after lighting it. I remember one year when the youth pastor's son thought the Advent candle was a birthday candle and was doing his best to blow it out. Everyone was chuckling.

My church does that also. The last couple of years my wife and I read and lit one of the weeks. My irrational fear was the candle we carried up would go out and I'd look like more of a doofus than usual going back for the lighter.

We have them sitting up on the platform/stage/raised area/ whatever it's called. There is an unusual amount of fussing with the lighter, sometimes.

We have whomever is lighting sit on the front row and light up just before their cue. They then walk up the steps and read the passage. So far the only mishap I know of is in my imagination. Our Advent candles at home remain unlit, but are a good reminder of why we worship.
