As we look into my brother-in-law’s suicide, signs point to new medication causing a sudden surge in depression and random out-of-character actions which he hid from all of us. If you take medication and experience depression or suicidal thoughts, TELL YOUR PROVIDER IMMEDIATELY.

And you can be clear at the start with a provider that you’ve had ongoing suicidal thoughts for a long time but are worried about sharing that and ask what your protection is, when they’d act, etc. Most providers know overreacting is harmful. (Parents can make that a lot worse.)
