That comics are primarily purchased in comic shops now strikes me as a huge problem. I loved my local comic shop as a teenager, but I only discovered it because I got into comics by picking up Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Transformers etc. at the local drug store or gas station.

Hello. I respectfully disagree with your comment. There is an atmosphere in comic shops that I find unmatched. It's nice to walk in and see what new stuff has come out, as well as the special collectables on the wall.

Oh, I love comic shops. But I never would have entered one if I hadn’t first been introduced to comics on a spinner rack in the local drug store. I went to the shop because I wanted comics. But I WANTED comics because I stumbled across them and they caught my imagination.

The problem isn’t that there are comic shops (indeed, one problem with the current industry seems to be that it’s making shops unsustainable). The problem is that not putting cheap books on newsstands kills opportunities for the next generation to fall in love with the medium.

Only people who go into comic shops can see comics. The audience never grows this way.
