After Mass this week, our priest commented that he genuinely enjoys seeing and hearing us wrestle the kids in the front row every week. I asked how often he almost cracks up and he admitted he’s come close. That’s one major difference I’ve experienced from Protestant churches.

I think the difference is twofold: You want the kids and parents immersed in the worship and there’s no lengthy teaching part. Catholics have so many kids you can’t fit all the loud ones in a side room. Half the Church would be empty, with nothing but stern old ladies remaining.

Replying to @galev_ph @TheBrometheus
Sidenote: from 1st and 2nd hand I often heard the stern old ladies are actually happy to see the youth in church. Gives them a vision of a future, that it will not die with them.

We experience all you're speaking of, including rowdy children. I'd say all our church peers recognize our children as the future of God's church and MUST be taught/loved well to "keep" the faith. At the same time, hopefully the current keepers of the faith are we, the elders.

I still remember a point a priest made once: if you don't make little kids feel welcome at church, don't be surprised if they will not want to come when they are older.

One Sunday, during the homily, the pastor was talking about some sin or other and my (at the time) four year old interrupted and said, "But Pastor, Jesus died to forgive that!" And the pastor said, "And He rose again, ascended to Heaven and will return. Child finished for me."
