I’m a Catholic, but I’m friends with a lot of atheists. I love them just as much as I love my Christian friends, but a common theme I hear is frustration with the hypocrisy of Christians who teach one thing and do another. So let me say this: I will disappoint each one of you.

Christians are not good people. We don’t have a magic skill to be good. Sometimes we commit horrendously evil acts. We Christians are so deeply flawed we rely on a Savior to make up for our enormous deficiencies. This is supposed to make us humble, that another pays our debts.

Many take this an an excuse to feel high and mighty because their debt is covered. But humility and love and compassion are required virtues to maintain a state of Grace, and without them, we are failing our core teaching. I will do this as well. I will absolutely fail at times.

Among my shortcomings is a tendency to get overly angry and act as thorough I have a right to make decisions about what justice others deserve for their failings. I may sometimes believe erroneously that I have greater wisdom than others, or that I am not as foolish as some.

Remember that I am a deeply flawed person trying to live out a perfect code of conduct. In no way should my actions reflect on the message I am trying to live. And I invite each and every one of you to call me on it when I am failing to live that message. That helps us all.

Any Christian who claims to be good is not good and needs to return to the core teaching. Remember this and hold it as true. My darkest fear is that I will, through one of my own enormous failings, drive someone away from truth and healing. So always call it out.
