I’m a Catholic, but I’m friends with a lot of atheists. I love them just as much as I love my Christian friends, but a common theme I hear is frustration with the hypocrisy of Christians who teach one thing and do another. So let me say this: I will disappoint each one of you.

Christians are not good people. We don’t have a magic skill to be good. Sometimes we commit horrendously evil acts. We Christians are so deeply flawed we rely on a Savior to make up for our enormous deficiencies. This is supposed to make us humble, that another pays our debts.

Many take this an an excuse to feel high and mighty because their debt is covered. But humility and love and compassion are required virtues to maintain a state of Grace, and without them, we are failing our core teaching. I will do this as well. I will absolutely fail at times.

Always hear about one of the main tenets of the Christian philosophy being the understanding of how flawed and wicked human beings actually are, and how realising your own perversions if a first step closer to God.

The only reason I don't consider myself a christian is simply because I lack faith; I think the philosophy and teachings of Christ are what makes western society so great and wonderful, it's humbling and it teaches compassion through introspection.

I hope I can add to that perception despite my own inevitable mistakes. If you ever want to talk about this, I’m be thrilled.
