I thought the Catholic Church was arrogant for requiring 6 months of classes to join. Now I see why. Mention you’re Catholic and someone will come out with a snide comment, or say all Catholics are crap, or threaten your job. 6 months shows you this and gives you tools to cope.

Yes, I know that the US is primarily protestant and actually many of the settlers fled for religious reasons (often from persecution if I am not mistaken). So in historical context, it "makes sense".
