Oh heck yeah. Stephen King had a huge impact on me. Especially The Stand since it greatly amped up my hypochondria.

I’m fascinated how just a paragraph can change a person. There’s a bit in a Piers Anthony about a musical competition that forever changed my attitude about the importance of singing backup properly (to enhance the lead, not yourself).

That's too bad. And a good example of how honest faith was bled out of the culture. With Dunsany, CL Moore, and Poul Anderson it is a first class element. Starting in the fifties it is either absent or smugly satirized. Card's handling of religion in Ender's Game is weak.

Imo that was not the main point of Ender's Game because it tries to be a little of everything.

I mean the original series of books where it leads up to Ender falling for a not-so-great woman who then follows her into a monastery to be with her. It's just awful. A heroic character reduced to that. It's as bad as the handling of Han and Luke under Disney. No imagination.

I hated it for Ender...but it honestly made sense for the character. Everything he had been through? Losing his mom and Valentine? His tremendous empathy and savior complex? It was very real how he ended up.

The true meaning and power of both Ender and Jesus is empathy, which imo is the theme of Ender's Game and what I learned the most from the book.

The true message of Jesus is empathy? Hmmmm. No. I think that might be too simple. He had compassion on us, to be sure. And shared in our temptations and sufferings. But you can’t sum up the gospel with only empathy.

Empathy doesn’t get you crucified.

Heh. Well. That depends on who you empathize with.
