I personally love tropes. They’re comforting. But I also like to see the tropes be a basis for something rather than comprising the entirety of the story.
Well established routine story tools and plot devices used over and over in many stories until they become familiar. The ditzy blonde friend, the evil businessman, the small town with an evil secret, all kinds of things. They’re super familiar as soon as we hear the first mention

Critics are extremely harsh when they see a trope in a story. But most audiences really love them because tropes feel familiar and help the audience identify with the story or the characters much faster.
